Converting an image for your laser

  1. Drop your logo or line drawing above. Black & white mode is pre-selected.
  2. Set the threshold so the parts you want engraved or cut are solid black.
  3. Remove specks and add smoothing. Fewer nodes mean smoother motion and faster jobs.
  4. Download SVG (or PDF for software that prefers it).
  5. Import into LightBurn, Glowforge, xTool or RDWorks, set the size and choose cut, score or engrave for the layer.

Getting clean laser paths

Closed shapes for cutting. Cut-outs need closed outlines. The tracer always outputs closed shapes, which is exactly what laser cutting requires.

Watch the kerf. The laser removes a fraction of a millimetre of material. For tight-fitting inlays or press-fit parts, offset the paths in your laser software rather than in the image.

Bridges for stencils. Letters like O and A lose their middles when cut from a sheet. Add small bridges to the source image before converting, or use a stencil font.

Vector engraving vs fill. Setting a vector layer to Fill in LightBurn engraves the inside of each shape line by line, giving a crisp-edged solid area. Setting it to Line traces just the outline, which is ideal for thin, fast scoring.

Photos. For photographs, use dithering in your laser software instead of converting to SVG. If you want a stylised, posterised effect, try Logo / colour mode with 3–5 colours and assign each colour a different power level.

Free and private

There’s no watermark and no upload — handy when you’re producing customer logos and personalised gifts, because client artwork never leaves your workshop computer.

Job Mode Tips
Cutting shapes from wood or acrylic Black & white High speck removal, medium smoothing
Engraving a logo Logo / colour, 2–3 colours One layer per power level
Scoring line art Line art Lower smoothing to keep detail
Stencils Black & white Add bridges to letters first

Before you hit start

Always run a test on scrap material, check that the design is sized correctly in millimetres or inches in your laser software, and confirm that cut lines are on the right layer. Clean, simple vectors from this converter make each of those checks quicker, because there are fewer stray shapes to hunt down.

Frequently asked questions

Should I engrave a raster image or a vector?

Photos and shaded artwork engrave best as raster images. Logos, text, line art and anything you want to cut out work best as vectors, which give sharper edges and are much faster to score.

Will the SVG open in LightBurn?

Yes. Use File → Import and choose the SVG. Black & white mode gives a single layer you can set to Line (cut or score) or Fill (engrave).

Does it work with Glowforge and xTool?

Yes. Glowforge and xTool Creative Space both import SVG files directly.

Why are my cuts slow or messy?

Lots of tiny fragments make the laser jump around. Increase 'Remove small specks' and Smoothing to reduce the number of nodes and stray shapes.

What size will the SVG be?

It keeps the pixel size of your original image. Set the real-world size in your laser software before cutting.

Is my design uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your browser, so customer artwork stays on your device.
